Pre-Dialysis Facts

What is Predialysis? A pre-dialysis patient is one who has kidney disease but is not yet on dialysis. It is critical to listen to your medical team at this point and do exactly what they say. The more closely you follow their advice, the longer it will be before you will need to go on dialysis. Of course, that is a generalization, but following their advice will keep you healthier!

The meals here along with the GRF tool at Davita.com will be great helps for you. Davita has discussion forums as well.

Before making any changes to your diet, make sure you discuss them with your doctor or dietician.

What do I need to do to eat healthy with my pre-dialysis diet?

  • Limit your protein, sodium, phosphorus and potassium intake.
  • Keep your meal portions down
  • Watch your blood pressure
Protein Sodium

When protein is broken down in the body, it produces nitrogen wastes. Your kidneys have lost the ability to get rid of those wastes. As they build up, you can experience nausea, vomiting, fatigue and loss of appetitite. Lowering the protein in your diet lowers the amount of wastes in the blood and lessens the work load of the kidney.

Animal products like fish, poultry, eggs, meat and dairy products
Vegetable products like breads, cereals, rice, pasta, and dried beans

Sodium is a mineral in your body used for maintaining fluid balance, regulating blood pressure, muscle contraction and nerve activity.

When your kidneys are not working properly they lose the ability to get rid of excess dietary sodium. This can lead to serious health problems.

Phosphorus Potassium

Phosphorus is a mineral in the body that works with calcium to keep your bones healthy and strong. Phosphorus is also needed for normal nerve and muscle function. When kidney function declines, the body cannot get rid of excess phosphorus (phosphorus levels increase) and the body cannot take in enough calcium (calcium levels decrease). To try and correct this imbalance the body will “steal” calcium from the bones, which makes the bones weak.

Potassium is a mineral in your body used to control your heart beat. It maintains your normal body fluids and is responsible for moving your muscles and sending messages to your nerves.

When your kidneys are not working properly they lose the ability to get rid of excess potassium. High levels of potassium in the blood can be dangerous to your health.
